Dr Glenn Kennedy has a BSc and PhD in Biochemistry. He joined the staff of the Veterinary Sciences Division of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (Belfast) in 1987. In 1989, he was appointed Head of the Biochemistry Section and in 2001 was appointed Head of the newly formed Chemical Surveillance Branch. His Branch is the UK National Reference Laboratory for most of the substances banned by European legislation (hormones, nitroimidazoles, ß agonists, nitrofurans, etc). To date he has authored more than 160 refereed scientific papers, many of which concern the analysis, pharmacokinetics or causes of veterinary drug residues. He was a member of the Expert Group responsible for drafting Commission Decision 2002/657/EC, concerning analytical method validation. He has co-ordinated 2 EU-funded research projects (including the nitrofuran project - FoodBRAND) and has been a partner in several others. He has acted as an advisor to government and/or industry in relation to the analysis of veterinary drug residues, especially the illegal drugs, in food of animal origin in a range of countries, including Thailand, China, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, etc.
