Dirk Courtheyn was born on August 11, 1955 in Zottegem, Belgium. He did a Master of Engineering in Agricultural Sciences (option chemistry) at Ghent University. He started his career in 1979 at the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry of The Faculty of Agriculture, Ghent University. Since 1981, he has been working for the Ministry of Agriculture State Laboratory. In 2002 this laboratory became the “Federal Laboratory for the Food Safety”, incorporated into the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (Ministry of Public Health). Until 2002, he was responsible for the “Residues and Contaminants” division. He then became Deputy Laboratory Manager and since March 2005 Laboratory Manager. He is author and co-author of more than 50 scientific publications and member of several scientific committees. He coordinated two SMT-projects (EU) and took part in EC-missions to assess the general organization of residues arrangements in several countries. He is a technical auditor in the Belgian and Dutch accreditation system.
